Sounds of Safety
It is very unusual listen Sounds Signals sent from sailing boats in
navigation or in ports, however Sounds Signals are very strictly regulated and requested
according with the International Regulations for Preventing Collision at the Sea.
We resume some of the Rules exctract from COLREG 1972 approved by all the
Countries of the world, Rules sometimes forgotten by many Captains, also if some of them
are typical of vessels powered by engine.
Regulations for Preventing Collision at the Sea - COLREG 1972
Rule1 - Application
These Rules shall apply to all vessels upon the high seas and in all waters connected
their with navigable seagoing vessels.
Rule 2 - Responsibility
Nothing in these Rules shall exonerate any vessel, or the owner master or crew thereof,
from consequences of any neglect to comply with these rules or of the neglect of any
precaution which may be required by the ordinary practice of seamen, or by the special
circumstances of the case.
Rule 32 - Definitions

"short
blast" means a blast of about one second duration

"prolonged blast" means a blast of from four to six second's duration
Rule 33 - Equipment of the sound signals
A vessel of 12 meters or more in length shall be provided with a whistle and a bell
complying with the specifications in Annex III.

Rule 36 - Signal to attract attention
If necessary to attract the attention of another vessel may make sound signals that can
not be mistaken for any signal authorized elsewhere in these Rules, or may direct the beam
of its searchlight in the direction of the danger in such a way as not to embarrass any
vessel.
Rule 37 - Sound signals for distress and
require assistance

ANNEX III - e) Positioning of whistles
When a directional whistle is to be used as the only whistle on a vessel, it shall be
installed with its maximum intensity directed straight ahead. A whistle shall be placed as
high as practicable on a vessel, in order to reduce interception of the emitted sound by
obstruction and also to minimize hearing damage risk to personnel.
We suggest to check your whistle, your horn, its
electrical connection, its operation, to make it always at its maximum efficiency,
suddenly in emergency you need to use it.
Remember that as much your horn is over the sea level
better is its efficiency, and save your ears.
